Naturalization is the process of acquiring British citizenship after obtaining indefinite leave to remain (ILR). It’s a popular and straightforward route to becoming a British citizen.

To qualify for naturalization, you must have ILR and have lived in the UK for a specific period. Additionally, you’ll need to meet other criteria, as outlined below.

Eligibility Requirements for British Citizenship by Naturalization

To obtain British citizenship through naturalization, you must meet all the requirements outlined in the British Nationality Act 1981. These requirements include:

• Age: You must be 18 or older. If you’re between 16 and 18, you’ll need parental consent to apply.
• Residence:
  
  • Non-Spouses/Civil Partners: At least 5 years of residence in the UK with no more than 450 days of absence in the last 5 years.
  • Spouses/Civil Partners: At least 3 years of residence in the UK with no more than 270 days of absence in the last 3 years. Additionally, you cannot be absent for more than 90 days in the 12 months before applying.
  • Physical Presence: You must be physically present in the UK on the first day of the relevant 5- or 3-year qualifying period.
• Good Character: You must be of good character.
• Language and Knowledge: You need to pass the Life in the UK test and an English language test.
• Permanent Residence: You must intend to live permanently in the UK.
